The region of Malaga - Costa del Sol or metropolitan region of Malaga, includes exclusively Malaga and its municipal district.

the route begins with the Palacio de los Condes de Buenavista,which is an example of lordly architecture and where different styles such as Renaissance and Mudejar combine. Nowadays it's the central office of the Picasso Museum. at a short distance you can find Malaga's cathedral built on the ancient mosque of Aljama founded by los Reyes Católicos.In the interior you can find theMuseo Catedralicio. On the south is situated the Plaza de la Marinaand surrounding el casco antiguo on the north side we reach la Plaza de la Constitución also known as Plaza Mayor, in the center stands out Charles V fountain or Fuente Genovesa. Further north you can find San Felipe Neri, church with a classical style, built in the 18th century.

Alcazaba

Continuing the trip, we reach the Plaza de La Merced, where theObelisco stands out in tribute to General Torrijos and Picasso's native house, central office of the Fundation that is named after him. On top of the hill you can findLa Alcazaba, in those days military fortress of muslim domination. Declared as a national monument in the year 1931 is nowadays a roman theatre,built in I century a.C. and used until the 3rd century d.C. Going down towards the sea is Malaga's townhall, popularly known as La Casona del Parque because it's situated in the Paseo del Parque, built at the beginning of the XX century populated of flora with a big variety of tropical species. At the East side and on top of the mountain of Gibralfaro named after the Castillo de Gibralfaro built as a protection for La Alcazaba.Nowadays it's an interpretation center and has panoramical views of the city.

Parque natural Montes de Malaga

Now we will leave the city and go to the gardens of Finca El Retiro also known as Hacienda de Santo Tomás del Monte. It is one of the most important spanish gardens, declared in 1984 National historical monument and formed by different settings such as the Aquarium or the ornithological colection of exotic birds. At present it is private property but there are information desks and venta de entradas as well as a wide range of services. And to finish the route we can visit the Parque Natural Montes de Malaga, situated at the North of the city with 5.000 hectares formed by small hills and afluent tributaries of the river Guadalmedina. In this place live a variety of species that are in danger of extinction such as the chameleon.
