The origin of lobster stew

We need to go back to the beginning of the twentieth century to find the origins of this dish based on fried tomatoes, peppers, onion, garlic, parsley, some water, salt and the lobster which is slowly cooked in a clay pot. The fisherman ate it every day; being one of their main food supplies.

Today, this traditional dish is without a doubt the identity of Fornells and the main gastronomic interest of the island, especially between the 1<sup>st</sup> April and the 31<sup>st</sup> August which is the only time of the year that fishing is allowed.

Although lobster stew is believed to be expensive, this is really not true. Portions are large enough so it is usual to order one for two people or two stews for three people. So for about 35€ you can feast like a king!

Where do we recommend to enjoy a delicious lobster stew? The emblematic restaurant Es Cranc, one of the most popular spots to taste this wonderful dish. The lobster stew of Sa Llagostais more refined and also a little pricey. The restaurant Can Burdó combines tradition of the ‘caldereta’ as they were one of the first to serve this dish, with a menu of other fish and seafood dishes.

Another place to be on your list when you visit Fornells is the restaurant Es Port. Their recipe of lobster stew is superb and authentic. In addition with a friendly and wonderful service and great value for money.
