Turin Porta Nuova - Train Station

What to See, Do, and Visit in and Around Turin with Your Rental Car Turin is an elegant city in Northern Italy and the capital of the Piedmont region. It is steeped in royal history, majestic monuments, and an aristocratic charm. Surrounded by the towering Alps and bisected by the Po River, the city offers spectacular landscapes that you can enjoy with total freedom as you explore by car.

Turin Porta Nuova Train Station Torino Porta Nuova is the city’s main railway hub and one of the busiest stations in Italy. Opened in the 19th century, it is famous for its impressive facade and central location. It is the perfect arrival point if you are traveling via high-speed rail from cities like Rome, Milan, or Florence, and it even offers international connections to France. Located in the heart of the city, renting a car here allows you to start your journey through Piedmont the moment you step off the train.

Car Rental in Turin Having a car in Turin is a fantastic choice if you want to visit the outskirts of the city and explore as many palaces and natural landscapes as possible. You won't have to rely on public transport and can travel at your own pace, exploring Alpine valleys or wine regions without schedule restrictions. Turin is an ideal base for touring the region by vehicle.

Emblematic locations such as Asti, Alba, or the stunning Stupinigi hunting lodge are just a few miles away, allowing you to design a personalized route to discover the essence of Piedmont beyond the capital.

Turin Tourist Information As the former capital of the Duchy of Savoy and the first capital of unified Italy, Turin has played a crucial role in European history. Known for its Baroque architecture and wide boulevards, the city is a premier cultural hub. Here are some of the top sights and attractions you shouldn't miss.

What to See in Turin No trip is complete without visiting Piazza Castello, the city’s heart, home to the Palazzo Reale and Palazzo Madama. Just a few steps away is the Turin Cathedral (Duomo di San Giovanni Battista), which houses the famous Holy Shroud. However, the undisputed icon of the city is the Mole Antonelliana, which hosts the National Museum of Cinema; its panoramic elevator will take you up 85 meters for an unrivaled view of the city and the Alps.

Another great treasure is the Egyptian Museum, the oldest in the world dedicated exclusively to this culture and the second most important after Cairo. If you're looking for something unique, a stroll under Turin’s Portici (porticos)—over 18 kilometers of covered walkways—will let you enjoy the city even if the weather doesn't cooperate.

Driving Routes in Turin With your rental car, you can easily drive up to the Basilica of Superga, located on a hill on the outskirts. The drive offers spectacular views, and the church itself is a Baroque masterpiece. You can also drive to Valentino Park on the banks of the Po River, where you will find the Valentino Castle and the charming reconstruction of a Medieval Village (Borgo Medievale).

Crossing the bridges over the Po, such as the Vittorio Veneto Bridge, will quickly lead you to the Church of the Gran Madre di Dio, whose architecture resembles the Pantheon in Rome and is surrounded by legends of the Holy Grail.

Day Trips by Car If you decide to rent a car, touring the Royal Residences is a must. Drive to the Reggia di Venaria Reale, known as the "Italian Versailles" for its endless gardens. Afterward, head south to explore the Langhe region, world-famous for its Barolo vineyards and medieval castles. Finally, stop in Alba, a town renowned for its medieval atmosphere and prestigious white truffles.

Road Trip Options from Turin Turin is the perfect gateway for a road trip through Northwest Italy. Its location allows for easy access to the Aosta Valley to see Mont Blanc, the Lakes Maggiore and Como, or even a drive down to the Ligurian coast to visit Genoa and picturesque Portofino. You set the plan; the car gives you the freedom to discover every corner.

Gastronomy in Turin Piedmontese cuisine is among the most refined in Italy. Don't miss the agnolotti del plin (small stuffed pasta) and vitello tonnato. For those with a sweet tooth, Turin is the capital of chocolate: the Gianduiotto is its most famous ambassador. To drink, the Bicerin is a must—a delicious blend of coffee, chocolate, and milk cream served in the city’s historic cafés.

Climate in Turin The climate is continental, with cold winters and warm summers. In December and January, temperatures usually range between -1°C and 7°C, with fog or snow common on nearby peaks. In July and August, the mercury rises to 20-30°C, with humidity that invites you to seek refuge under the cool downtown porticos or escape to the breeze of the Alps.
