More than ever, we are practising outdoor sports and take our bike with us when we have a weekend away. At Centauro Rent a Car, we can give you a few simple tips on how to install a bike rack on your car.
Types of racks available for your car
Before we begin, it is important to know the different types of racks available, but this will mostly depend on how much you will be using it and what type of vehicle you have will make you decide which one is best for you.
- The most common and easy to fit are those that are fixed onto the boot. Many suppliers offer bicycle racks that are compatible with the majority of vehicles on the market. To mount this type of bracket, you must fix it to the different slots of the car door and then tighten the straps as much as possible so that the support does not have any room for movement when the car is on the road. Some of these can carry up to 40 kilos in weight, so you can carry more than one bike. The downside is that you need to take down and assemble each time you fancy a ride out with your bike.
- If you use your bike regularly and it is not practical to keep assembling it on your car, then we recommend that you use the type that can be fitted on to a tow ball. This type is easy to install either suspended or on a platform and can carry up to four bikes at the same time. Most of these allow for a slight inclination so you can easily open the boot if you need to and can be folded away when you do not need it. Some can also block the lock of the bikes with the same key as the car for total security.
- Another possibility if you do not have a tow ball is to opt for a roof rack. If you choose this type then you must make sure that your car has the required rails on the roof so that the rack can be fitted easily. This option still gives you total visibility when driving your car. As a curiosity, some of the latest Opel models already incorporate a built-in bike stand as standard which means that you do not need to install anything else. Just make sure to add this at the time of purchase of the vehicle.
