Golf in Malaga (south)

Golfing is also one of the most popular sports on the Costa del Sol. It doesn't have 40 top-quality golf courses for nothing, and many of these have been chosen in the past as venues for international championships such as the Ryder Cup, Volvo Masters and Spanish Open.
» Atalaya Golf: the Old Course at Atalaya follows a parkland layout, set amidst tall eucalyptus and pine trees. The New Course is hillier than the Old Course and boasts panoramic views over the Mediterranean across to Africa.

» El Paraiso Golf: designed in 1973, by the legendary Gary Player, the signature hole on this course is the par 5 6th, a dogleg that incorporates fairway bunkers, lakes and a two-tiered green to test even the lowest handicapper.

» Flamingos Golf: thoughtfully crafted in the style of a Tuscan garden, this 6,434 yard championship course has already played host to the European Tour Seniors Matchplay. Look out for the roman columns, statues and marble bridges found on some of the fairways.

» Antiguo campo de San Roque: this long course was originally designed by Dave Thomas but has since had the bunkers redesigned by the legendary Seve Ballesteros and played host to the Spanish Open in 2005. The main hazards of the course include strategically placed bunkers, deceptive water hazards and tight, sloping fairways that demand straight, accurate driving.

» Nuevo campo de San Roque: this course is the newest edition to the resort and has been designed with both amateurs and professionals in mind, emphasised by the five different tee positions on each hole. Host to the Spanish Open in 2006, the course was designed by the renowned American, Perry Dye and benefits from wider fairways than the Old Course, which provides slightly more room for error.

» Almenara Golf Club: not content with building this course over very hilly terrain, this Dave Thomas layout presents further difficulties in the form of narrow fairways and typical highlipped fairway bunkers, which catch anything hit off target.

» La Reserva Club de Golf: this stunning course has open fairways and large greens that offer golfers plenty to aim at. However, you'll be required to use all of the clubs in your bag to reach the greens in regulation, which makes this a thoroughly entertaining course.

» Alcaidesa Golf: This fantastic course is truly reminiscent of a classic Scottish seaside layout complete with heather and gorse bushes. It was designed by Peter Allis and Clive Clark, and is the closest you'll get to a links course in Andalucia!.

» La Cañada Golf: Robert Trent Jones Sr designed the front 9 holes and Dave Thomas the back 9 of this wonderfully situated golf course, emphasising the quality of its layout.
